Mozilla has it’s Minimo browser for pocket PCs, but right now Mozilla plans to develop fully featured Firefox for mobile devices. Mozila’s Mike Schroepfer recently stated that Mozilla plans to enter the mobile space with a mobile version of its Firefox browser. He noted that Mozilla had delayed its decision to enter the mobile market until handset specs included more than 64 MB of RAM and faster processors. Mobile Firefox will be able to run Firefox extensions on mobile devices, and provide a more desktop-like browsing experience with better access to bookmarks and browsing history. Mozilla has brought on new developers to head its mobile efforts and plans to ship mobile Firefox some time in 2008.
Also, Mozila’s mobile Firefox browser will likely be available for phones running Symbian, Windows Mobile and Linux operating systems. Windows Mobile and Linux phones are more likely to be used for for the browser, mainly because those operating systems share most of the code with their corresponding operating systems on PCs, making it easier to build the mobile version of the browser, said Doug Turner, a Mozilla engineer working on the mobile project. Symbian, however, is totally different from any of the desktop operating systems so would require more work, he said. “But since Symbian has such a wide market it may make sense to do that,” he said. Symbian, which runs on Nokia Corp.’s phones, has the bulk of smartphone market share, even though its presence in the U.S. is small.
